Franco was known as the "Caudillo", a heroic name given to the ancient Spanish chieftains who waged war against the Romans#Franco was a great fan of Spanish films, recognizing their importance as a propaganda tool. "The General has died," went the joke at the time. "But who will dare to tell the General?"
